Amazon is currently offering Snow Leopard at Apple’s announced price of $29 for OS X Leopard users, and the listing notes that while Snow Leopard is slated for a September release, no official release date has been announced.

Amazon has also prominently featured an “Upgrade Path Alert” notifying customers that the upgrade is available only for Intel computers currently running OS X Leopard.

Please note, that only Apple OS X Leopard users are eligible for the Snow Leopard upgrade. Tiger & earlier OS users will need to purchase either versions of the upgraded Mac Box Set. Also, Snow Leopard will only run on intel-based Mac computers.

Amazon has also begun offering pre-orders of OS X Snow Leopard family packs, Mac Box Sets bundling Snow Leopard with iLife ’09 and iWork ’09, and Snow Leopard Server.

Apple this morning quietly updated its Time Capsule combination wireless router and network-attached storage drive to double the models’ capacities at the same price points as the previous models: 1 TB for $299 and 2 TB for $499. While Apple’s main Time Capsule product page is not yet reflecting the upgraded capacities, the new models are available in the online Apple Store, where a small banner ad on the main store page advertises the upgrade. The new models are currently listed as shipping within 24 hours.

Rumors of a 2 TB Time Capsule first surfaced in early April when an image of a 2 TB Time Capsule box appeared on one of retailer ClubMac’s product pages.

Update: Apple has now revised its Time Capsule product pages to reflect the updated models. All technical specifications other than storage capacity appear to remain the same as the previous models.

Using a flaw they’ve found in the iPhone’s handling of text messages, the researchers say they’ll demonstrate how to send a series of mostly invisible SMS bursts that can give a hacker complete power over any of the smart phone’s functions. That includes dialing the phone, visiting Web sites, turning on the device’s camera and microphone and, most importantly, sending more text messages to further propagate a mass-gadget hijacking.

According to the report, researchers Charlie Miller and Collin Mulliner notified Apple of the vulnerability over a month ago, but the company has yet to issue a patch for it.

Miller was the lead researcher behind an effort that discovered a vulnerability in the original iPhone soon after its 2007 launch, a flaw that Apple addressed with the release of iPhone OS 1.0.1 just two days before Miller was set to publicize his findings at that year’s Black Hat conference.

In a companion piece to its report on Apple and record labels planning to launch interactive album booklets for iTunes Store music, The Financial Times provides additional details regarding Apple’s planned launch of a tablet computer. Concurring with other reports, the new tablet is rumored to carry a screen of up to 10 inches, Internet access, and integration with Apple’s music and application stores.

In a twist on previous rumors, the report closely ties the new device to the rumored new music content deals, which The Financial Times claims are planned for a September launch.

The device is expected to be launched alongside new content deals, including some aimed at stimulating sales of CD-length music, according to people briefed on the project. The touch-sensitive computer will have a screen that may be up to 10 inches diagonally.

It will connect to the internet like the iPod Touch – probably without phone capability but with access to the web, and to Apple’s online stores for software and entertainment.

The report also focuses on the tablet’s apparent importance to the movie and e-book industries.

The entertainment industry is hoping that Apple, which revolutionised the markets for music players and for phones, can do it again. “It’s a portable entertainment device,” said one entertainment executive. “It’s going to be fabulous for watching movies.”

Recording industry executives said Apple planned to use the larger screen to offer new services such as interactive booklets and liner notes that come along with purchases of entire music CDs.

While Apple has reportedly not been in touch with movie studios, film executives have expressed interest in providing new content for the rumored tablet, and video game publishers are also looking to the device as a new platform for their content.

According to CNET, Microsoft has confirmed that it has signed leases for upcoming retail stores in Scottsdale, Arizona and Mission Viejo, California. The stores are among the first in Microsoft’s retail store initiative that is planned to directly compete with Apple’s retail stores in a number of locations beginning later this year.

The Orange County, Calif., store is in a mall that already houses an Apple retail store. Microsoft Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner said at this month’s Worldwide Partner Conference that some of the locations would be right near Apple stores.

The first stores’ fall opening comes at an opportune time for Microsoft, which is launching Windows 7 on October 22.

According to presentation from Microsoft’s retail consultant leaked last week, concepts for the stores include an “Answer Bar” or “Guru Bar” similar to Apple’s Genius Bar, large digital media walls presenting dynamic information and images, and themed “stage areas” for various Microsoft technologies utilizing “Surface” multi-touch tables for interactive experiences.

Microsoft has reportedly hired former Apple real estate chief George Blankenship as a consultant to assist the company with securing locations for its new retail stores.

Technology companies join to challenge Google’s dominance

BREAKING NEWS

msnbc.com news services

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – Microsoft and Yahoo finally pulled together a long-rumored Internet search deal on Wednesday aimed at challenging Google’s dominance of online advertising.

The 10-year deal announced Wednesday gives Microsoft access to the Internet’s second-largest search engine audience, adding a potentially potent weapon to the software maker’s Internet arsenal as it girds for an all-out assault against online search and advertising leader Google Inc.

“This deal is a win-win for Microsoft and Yahoo,” said Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer in an e-mail to employees announcing the alliance.

“We will get the resources and scale we need to compete effectively in search and to continue to drive new innovation for customers and advertisers, while Yahoo will increase their focus and investment on their online consumer experiences and other business priorities.”

Ballmer said: “It’s been a long road to today’s announcement, but I’m extremely happy with where we ended up.”

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.)

The extended reach will allow Microsoft to introduce its recently upgraded search engine, called Bing, to more people. The Redmond, Wash.-based software maker believes Bing is just as good, if not better, than Google’s search engine. Taking over the search responsibilities on Yahoo’s highly trafficked site gives Microsoft a better chance to convert Web surfers who had been using Google by force of habit.

In return for turning over the keys to its search engine, Yahoo will get to keep 88 percent of the revenue from all search ad sales on its site for the first five years of the deal, and have the right to sell ads on some Microsoft sites.

Yahoo estimated the deal will boost its annual operating profit by $500 million and save the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company about $275 million on capital expenditures a year because it won’t have to invest in its own search technology.

Microsoft, the world’s largest software maker, has been courting Yahoo for several years in hopes of expanding its share of the online search market.

After being repeatedly rebuffed, Microsoft launched an unsolicited bid to buy Yahoo in its entirety. With co-founder Jerry Yang at the helm, Yahoo put up such staunch resistance that Microsoft withdrew its last offer of $47.5 billion, or $33 per share, nearly 15 months ago.

Yahoo shares have never gotten close to that level again, and the company’s market value was around $24 billion this week.

Microsoft is counting on Yahoo’s search engine, which ranks No. 2 with a worldwide market share of 8 percent, to pose a more formidable challenge to Google, which holds 67 percent of the global audience, according to the most recent data from research firm comScore Inc. In the United States, Google’s share is 65 percent, compared with roughly 20 percent for Yahoo.

Despite spending billions to upgrade its search engine, Microsoft still held just a 3 percent share worldwide and 8 percent in the U.S. in the most recent comScore tally.

The deal is likely to draw antitrust scrutiny. Last year, the U.S. Justice Department analyzed Yahoo’s plans for a search advertising partnership with Google before deciding that it would give Google too much control over the market — a conclusion loudly supported by Microsoft. The opposition forced Google and Yahoo to scuttle their deal.

Microsoft is doubling down on Internet search at the same time Google is attacking Microsoft’s bread-and-butter business of making software for personal computers.

Google is working on a free operating system for inexpensive personal computers in a move that could threaten Microsoft’s Windows franchise. If it gains traction, Google’s alternative, called Chrome OS, could divert some revenue from Microsoft while the software maker is trying to grab more of the money pouring into search advertising.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

The L.A. Times reports that Apple will begin allowing developers access to the tools they need to produce augmented reality applications starting with upcoming iPhone OS 3.1. While there have been many impressive demos floating around showing the possibilities, these applications have used unpublished APIs which prevent them from being allowed on the App Store. Apple, however, told one developer that the tools necessary would become available with iPhone 3.1.

Augmented reality uses the device’s GPS, camera and digital compass to overlay real-time data onto live video. Other possibilities include iPhone games as well as the Layar browser we’ve highlighted before. iPhone 3.1 has been seeded to early developers but the exact release date has not been revealed.
